Prior to graduating from Georgia College, I had the privilege to work at two summer camps and a daycare. My first job was working as the Assistant Waterfront Director at Gerald I. Lawhorn Scouting Base in Molina, Georgia. For the first four weeks there, I taught scouts the small boat sailing merit badge as well as helped lifeguard for other merit badges. After four weeks, I was moved to Nature Director and taught many different merit badges including environmental science, weather, mammal study, geology, and soil and water conservation. I continued to work until the end of summer and then returned to school. The following summer, I was able to work at a daycare in my hometown as a lifeguard. Each day, I checked and maintained the pools chemical levels as well as provided a safe and fun environment for the kids to enjoy swimming. I again returned to school at the conclusion of summer.
My most recent job, and most fun too, was working as a counselor for WinShape Camps for Communities. Durring the summer, we were challenged with putting on a full week of summer camp for nine different communities within the southeast. We loaded up two vans and a Penskie truck and drove to each community on the weekends. We would spend the majority of Sunday setting up camp and the second half of Friday taking down camp. Monday thru Friday we would engage in camp activities. There were 19 different skills/activities for the campers to take part in including archery, basketball, cheerleading, dance, soccer, wacky science and many more. There was also an hour each day dedicated to recreational outdoor games and activities, including a camp wide game called Triangulation. We interacted with campers with stories, games, songs and many other crazy activities. It was definitely a summer to remember.
Before college, I was heavily involved in a scout troop in my hometown. I spent numerous weekends on camping trips, service projects and merit badge work. Overall I was able to earn 45 merit badges and the highest scouting award of Eagle. I value each and every skill and memory I have learned in and out of school and scouting. I hope to use the skills I have and look forward togiving back to the world in which I live.
